Records of the Historical Records Survey in Portage County that were left with the County Clerk. Primarily from 1937-1939, also present are a few items dating as late as 1955. The records include transcriptions from county records; county maps; essays on various aspects of Portage County history; and a few county records, 1845, 1847, 1870, 1909, and 1922, which apparently became mixed in with these records.

The Historical Records Survey (HRS) had its origins in the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and the Civil Works Administration. In 1935 it came under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration Federal Writers' Project and eventually was designated as an independent program under Federal Project No. One.
