Journals kept by Willett S. Main, a native of New York State who came to Madison, Wis., in 1847, became a close personal and political friend of Elisha W. Keyes, and a brother-in-law of John C. Spooner. Main's daily entries contain information and commentary on developments within the Republican Party, on his own career as Dane County sheriff, United States deputy marshal, and state senator (1889-1893), on civic and social events in Madison, on Baptist church affairs, and on family matters.
