Papers and scrapbooks pertaining to the life and career of W.H. Upham, the seventeenth governor of Wisconsin, 1895-1897. The scrapbooks contain original letters, clippings, and memorabilia focusing on Upham's experiences as a soldier in the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War (including reminiscences of Jefferson Davis and Abraham Lincoln), highlights of his lumber business in Marshfield, Wisconsin, and his role as governor. Also included are photographs and lithographs and a pen and ink cartoon depicting Upham and other gubernatorial candidates in 1894. Volume One (in Box 2) was compiled by Mary Cornelia Kelley Upham, Upham's first wife; the second (Box 3) by his daughter-in-law Elizabeth Ann Upham; a third volume (Box 1) of unknown provenance, contains additional clippings about Upham, as well as his sister Angenette Upham Peavey and his nephew Fred W. Upham. Additional material in this collection was collected by Upham's second wife Grace Mason Upham and his son William H. Upham, Jr. and includes an unpublished biography by Harlan W. Hein, Jr.; an incomplete 1913 speech concerning military preparedness; military papers; legal documents and a will; and correspondence concerning a possible appointment as ambassador to Cuba, correspondence concerning Upham's secretary Nettie Dickson Wade, family letters to Grace Mason Upham, and a transcribed diary of Upham's first wife Mary. Photographs received with the collection are filed in the Upham Name File.
