Papers, 1911-1941.

Papers of Louise Phelps Kellogg, a notable American historian and a staff member at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Included is personal and professional correspondence, reference and research correspondence handled as a Society staff member, a subject index to this reference correspondence, articles and lectures, research notes, drafts and other papers concerning several of her book-length publications and her other research, an unpublished popular history of Wisconsin, files concerning the Mississippi Valley Historical Association (which she served as president, 1930-31) and the American Historical Association, diaries, and genealogical data. Included in the collection is information gathered during research into historical markers in Wisconsin, the legal ownership of the Draper Collection, the northeastern boundary of Wisconsin, place names, and the Historical Society's manuscript holdings. Also present are transcriptions and translations of several documents from these holdings which pertain to Indian treaties (1794-1836), the American Revolution, and social and military aspects of Wisconsin history (1805-1848). Lyman Copeland Draper (1815-1891), American historian known for his studies of the history of trans-Allegheny West. The State Historical Society was founded in 1846, chartered in 1853, and became a trustee of the state in 1855. Chapter 75, Laws of 1967, continued the Society as an independent agency. The Society is charged by statute with the collection, preservation, and dissemination of historical and cultural resources relating to Wisconsin, the Midwest, and the nation.
