Papers, 1849-1913 and n.d.

Papers, 1849-1913, are for the most part letters that focus on Reynold's service in the Confederate army, 1862-1865, in the Ala. Mounted Regiment, 51st. The letters were written to his wife Mary Jane, then residing in Alabama. They describe the realities of camp life, the economic disruption of war, including high prices, lack of food stuffs, and scarcity of livestock, and the concern of a husband for the safety of his wife and first son. Of particular interest are Reynold's descriptions of and references to fighting in East Tennessee (1862-1864), the Battle of Murfeesboro (1863), Yankee raids in Tennessee (1863), the Confederate defense of northern Georgia (1864-1865), the Confederate military heirarchy, and General Joseph Wheeler. Also of interest is the request by Thomas M. Owen in 1913 for the clarification of Colonel James Hagan's role in the Civil War, and Reynold's lengthy reply.
