Letter, 1861 May 14.

Letter to New York State Governor Edwin D. Morgan regarding the formation of a division under Dix's command composed of New York volunteer regiments. Dix informs Morgan that he will inform him as to what regiments are prepared to be sent forward as soon as possible. He also comments to Morgan on the lack of equipment, particularly socks, shirts, and shoes, of many of the units, and further states that "all the accepted regiments are to some extent unequipped." Dix was born in Boscawen, New Hampshire on July 24 1798, the son of Timothy Dix and Abigail Wilkins, and brother of composer Marion Dix Sullivan. He was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, and joined the US Army as an ensign in May 1813, serving under his father until the latter's death a few months later.
