Leading historian of Swedish-American colonial settlement in the Delaware Valley, motive force in the promotion of Swedish-American consciousness, and founder of a number of Swedish-American cultural organizations, including the American Swedish Historical Foundation and Museum, where he served as first curator. Also conducted ethnographic and philological research in Angola (Portuguese East Africa) as Director of the African Educational Expedition, 1922-1924.
