Recollections of Potter's Raid, 1886-1887.

Photocopies of a series of articles entitled "Recollections of Potter's Raid" written "By a Methodist Preacher." The series was published in the Watchman and Southron News Paper (Sumter, S.C.) from July 1886 to Jan. 1887. This collection is an incomplete set of the articles, which describe General Edward E. Potter's destructive raid through Sumter, Clarendon, and adjoining counties. Potter's army included troops of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. In article no. 19, Mood comments, "This march of Potter will never be forgotten because of its atrocities. Much, very much, must ever remain an unwritten history. Their brutality and savage wickedness can never be written."
