Journal and military appointment of Jonathan Colton Loomis. The journal, kept by Jonathan Colton Loomis in September and October 1814, details his travel from Hadley, Massachusetts, to Boston, Massachusetts, while on militia duty. Once in Boston, he describes his daily militia duties and also notes his activities away from militia service. The military appointment of Jonathan Colton Loomis printed in Northampton, Massachusetts, on July 28, 1814, and signed by Lt. Com. Charles Chapman appointed Loomis as Sergeant of a Company of Riflemen in the Fifth Regiment in the Second Brigade and Forth Division of the Milita of Massachusetts. On the verso, a note indicates Loomis was appointed Clerk of his Company on September 25, 1816, signed by Captain Parker.

Ten companies comprised the 12th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer Militia: five from Boston, one from North Bridgewater, one from Abington, one from Weymouth, one from Stoughton, and one from Gloucester. Jonathan Colton Loomis (1785-1864), a cabinetmaker of Whately, Massachusetts, served in the Massachusetts Militia. From the description of Journal and military appointment, 1814.
