Helen Therese Damrosch Tee-Van (1893-1976) was born in New York City, the granddaughter of violinist and conductor Leopold Damrosch and the daughter of conductor Frank Damrosch. She attended the Veltin School until 1909, and then continued studying art with George de Forest Brush, becoming a member of Jonas Lie's Memory Sketch Club.
