Autograph letters signed; documents; miscellaneous items; 55 Civil War letters in German by C.F.A. Martensen (1861-1863); letters received by C.F.A.Martensen and members of his family, some in German (1853-1923); documents (1822-1905); miscellaneous items (1855-1878). C.F.A.Martensen's letters describe hardships of soldiers and officers, attitudes of Southern civilians, use of Negro slaves by the Northern army, poor quality of army supplies, soldier's attitudes, as well as army movements and engagements. Documents, originating in Germany and in U.S., relate particularly to Martensen's military career. Stationery of some Civil War letters have black and white or colored lithographic letterheads depicting Civil War leaders, military and patriotic figures and scenes. Eight have colored lithograph and broadside verse on first page.

Patrick was born in Hounsfield, Jefferson County, New York (near Watertown). He worked on the Erie Canal and briefly taught school. Augustus Martensen (given name Carl Friedrich Augustus von Martensen), was born in Kiel, an independent town in the Schleswig-Holstein region of northern Germany, in 1822. At 26, he joined the Army of Schleswig-Holstein where he served in the artillery brigades during the First War of Schleswig (1848 to 1851).
