From [New] Brunswick, New Jersey, Washington writes to William Fitzhugh, near Fredericksburg, Virginia, introducing Dr. Wellford and praising him for his service to the "sick and wounded of our army in captivity." A second letter, 8 November 1799, from Difficult Bridge, Wylie's Tavern, Fairfax County, Virginia, to the Surveyor General of the Land Office, Richmond, Virginia, requests information on his discovery that William Shepherd, who was with Washington on the survey, may have filed on the same tract of land. Washington requests action. An accompanying letter, 7 November 1799, is filed in the land office, Letters Received, George Washington to Surveyor General, in the vault.
