Civil War letters, 1861.

The letters are all written to his wife, Sarah Elkins, and describe various experiences in camp and battle during the first year of the war in northern Virginia. Elkins also describes the sufferings of the wounded soldiers in hospitals and the significance for troop morale of a visit from President Jefferson Davis to the front after the battle of Manassas.

Joseph Milton Elkins was born in Fauquier County, Virginia in 1833, married his cousin, Sarah Ann Elkins on July 19, 1853, and at the outbreak of the Civil War enlisted as a private in Company A (and was later transferred to Company E), 49th Virginia Regiment.
