Petition in favor of Great Britain, 1781 June.

The original petition was found in fragments among the papers of Edmund Ruffin's (1794-1865) grandfather, Edmund Ruffin. The document was circulated in Prince George County, Virginia and reprutedly signed by numerous notable men. An American officer under the Marquis de Lafayette arrested the petitioner and tore up the petition. Ruffin salvaged. some fragments. In 1858 Edmund Ruffin the grandson, transcribed the fragments and added an explanatary note. This copy in an unknown hand, was made from the 1858 transcription. The petition complains of the miseries of war and urges a rapid reconciliation with England following the revolutionary war.
