Papers, 1872-1920.

This collection consists of two series. Series I is the papers created by Hill and relate to his political and official activities as Governor of New York State, 1885-1891 and as a U.S. Senator, 1892-1897. This series consists mainly of correspondence arranged chronologically. Generally the correspondence concerns election campaign activities and matters of political patronage as well as official duties. Prominent correspondents include Grover Cleveland (letters stored in the vault), Daniel S. Lamont, Roswell P. Flower and Samuel B. Tilden. Other papers include: material related to various legal cases, petitions regarding bills in the New York State Legislature, and copies of printed speeches. Lastly there is correspondence related to Hill's estate compiled by Peter Manwiller, the principal executor. Series II is the papers of George S. Bixby related to his work on an unpublished biography "The Life and Times of David Bennett Hill." Included among these papers are two drafts of the manuscript, Bixby's research notes, annotated speeches of Hill's and newsclippings.
