Copy of a letter to Henry Dundas (1 p.) with 4 enclosures: 2 letters from James Buchanan describing the difficulties of administration in Ceylon, owing to the great distance away of Batavia, the seat of the Dutch government (8 p.), and forwarding the letter from Van de Graaf, Governor of Ceylon (8 p.) acknowledging the receipt of the treaty between Holland and England, discussing the defence of Trincomale and augmenting troops in Tanjore, etc. Also, translation into English of a letter from Van de Graaf to the Nabob Ameer ul Hind, relating to the Pearl Fisheries and asking him to put an end to the native opposition to the Dutch Company (3 p.).

Henry Dundas, the first Viscount Melville (1742-1811), statesman, was the father of Robert Saunders Dundas, the second Viscount Melville (1771-1851), also a statesman.
