Collection primarily relates to Bernstein's research on history of Jews in Germany and other countries. Contains original German-Jewish documents, as well as photocopies and transcriptions of original documents, including edicts, circulars, notices, rabbinic and secular legal documents, contracts, amulets, letters, and sermons, from the 13th century to Holocaust period; correspondence with German libraries and archives and with YIVO, 1930-1968; inventories, lists, and catalogs of Jewish material in German archives; correspondence, minutes, reports, and other material concerning displaced persons' camps in Germany, 1945-1951, including Zionist activity, and Central Committee of Liberated Jews in Bavaria. Also contains documents concerning Jews in Argentina, 1904-1961; material concerning research into Yiddish language, 1937-1957; original documents concerning JEWISH DAILY FORWARD, New York, 1903-1904, 1945; personal correspondence, 1949-1961, including with American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and Jewish Restitution Successor Organization; and manuscripts, notes, articles, and lectures on Eastern European, German, and Argentine Jewry.
