Born in Bellingborough, Lincolnshire, England, Joshua Shaw was initially a sign painter in Manchester, then became known as a painter of portraits, flowers, still life, landscapes and cattle pieces, exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy in London. In 1817, Shaw settled in Philadelphia and began travelling through the South, making sketches and taking subscriptions for series of American views, which he engraved and published.
