Workbook, 1787-1788.

Contains mathematical problems and solutions along with many diagrams of geometric figures and hand-colored illustrations of ships, towers, and windmills. Many of the problems were taken from the activities of craftsmen, including bricklayers, carpenters, plasterers, joiners, painters, masons, and glaziers. Portions of the volume are devoted to geometry, trigonometry, proportions, measuring distance, surveying land, and navigation. A plane chart and a mercator chart were drawn in the volume. Journals of supposed ship voyages from Philadelphia to the West Indies are also featured. Shields was identified as the chief mate and he recorded wind, miles traveled, and the course. A second journal takes him from Philadelphia to Bermuda and back.
