Address made by Herndon on 1882 Nov. 1 at the home of R.P. Deshon in Mobile, Ala. Discusses his recent illness and its effect on his campaign for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives against Republican candidate Luther R. Smith. Herndon urges Democrats to unite against Republicans and blacks and answers accusations that he wishes to deny foreigners the right to vote.

Ala. lawyer and politician. A native of Greene Co., Ala., Herndon began practicing law in the county seat of Eutaw in 1849. He moved to Mobile in 1853 and was elected to the Ala. State legislature in 1857. In 1861 he represented Greene Co. at the state Constitutional Convention.
