One volume of notes on chemistry lectures delivered by Joseph Black at the University of Edinburgh. Lectures are dated 27 Feb. to 20 March. Note on first page of notes says "supposed to be 1792 or 3." Topics include oily substances and metals, followed by tables of the preparations of mercury and antimony. At the end are brief case notes on inflammation and ulcers.

Thomas Chalkley James was born in Philadelphia on 31 August 1766 to Abel and Mary or Rebecca (Chalkley) James. He married Hannah Morris in 1802. On 5 July 1835 he died in Philadelphia. James received his M.B. from the University of the State of Pennsylvania in 1787 and his M.D. from the Medical Department of the University of Pennsylvania in 1811.
