John Strother Griffin diary : ms, 1846-1847.

Leatherbound travel diary of Army's overland journey from Ft. Leavenworth, Ky. via New Mexico over the Southwest Trail to San Diego, Calif. Griffin describes military skirmishes, health of the soldiers, transport of animals, meetings with various Native American peoples of the Southwest, and rumors of political intrigue in Calif. Includes observations of political maneuvers of Gen. Kearny, Commodore Robert Stockton, and Gen. John C. Frémont; and detailed descriptions of the wounded and methods of treatment. Also includes a letter (2 p.) to Griffin from Dr. George B. Sanderson, a doctor with the Mormon Battalion of the "Army of the West," dated Apr. 12, 1847, concerning deployment of dragoon forces and an order by Frémont concerning public property in San Diego.

Trained as a topologist, Dr. John Sanders Griffin Jr. received his Ph. D. at Tulane in 1956, with a dissertation entitled A Notion of Parallelism in General Fibre Bundles .
