Letterbook, 1871.

Describes a trip to Europe in the form of letters to children. Both Mr. and Mrs. Cole took turns writing. Since the entries are all in one hand, they were probably copied from the originals into this volume. The first few letters discuss travel and life on board the Steamship Nevada, which departed from New York on March 29, 1871. The ship became disabled during the voyage, forcing the passengers to pay an unexpected visit to Dublin. Later, the Coles went to London, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, accompanied by another couple. The letters provide commentary on museums, excavated sites, dining, and the type of church services attended. Of particular interest, is their description of Hiram Powers' studio in Florence. Two photographs are laid in the volume. The first shows Hiram Powers in working attire. The second depicts a bust of an unidentified woman by Pierce Francis Connelly. It is inscribed "Florence May 27 - given me by Mr. Connelly's father as a souvenir of our visit to the studio."
