The reminiscences of Joseph Ballantine, 1961, [microform].

A transcript of Joseph Ballantine's oral history interviews with Mrs. Beate Gordon. Ballantine discusses his childhood in India, his U.S. consular service in Tokyo, the London Naval conference, and work at the Japan Desk, State Department. He describes his activities as a Consul General, as advisor to Cordell Hull, as Head of the Far Eastern Division, and as Director of the Office of Far Eastern Affairs. Ballantine also comments on the Japanese government in Manchuria, Pearl Harbor investigations, a post-war program for the Far East, occupation policies, and on such figures as Owen Lattimore, Joseph Grew, Eugene Dooman and Douglas MacArthur.
