Papers of Paul James Lindberg, 1868-1893 (bulk 1870-1880).

Lindberg's correspondence and daybooks that he kept in 1872-1880. The daybooks contain his rather florid reflections and maxims on history, literature, science, and theology, his poetry, and scattered recollections of his life. They also record the minutia of the life in a veteran's home, his family, and attempts to secure a military pension and find a job. The letters to Lindberg from his friend, Charles A. Lane of Mount Union, Ohio, a local music teacher deal with poetry and other literary interests and discuss the affairs of Mount Union College and Youngstown college. Also included are letters from other friends and family of Lindberg's, and his letters to various addresses, chiefly applications for various jobs, free railway passes, etc.

Paul James Lindberg, native of Wormland, Sweden, a Union veteran of the Civil War. In 1862, he served as private of Co. I of the 61st Regiment of Illinois Infantry. In 1868-1880, he was an inmate in the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (Northwestern Branch, Milwaukee, Wis.). Despite his desperate attempts to get a job as a bookkeeper, a schoolteacher, or even a janitor, he remained at the Home until his death.
