The collection consists of the business and legal papers of Russell, Majors and Waddell. It includes material about freighting operations, the mercantile business, land transactions in Kansas and Missouri, and the Pony Express. They were the freighters that supplied the U.S. army during the Utah War (1857-1858) and some material deals with that. The bulk dates are 1838 to 1868; one item is dated 1903. The material consists of business papers, documents, correspondence (both business and personal), bills, receipts and ephemera.

The firm of Russell, Majors and Waddell was established in 1854. The principals of the company were William Hepburn Russell (1828-72), William Bradford Waddell (1807-72), and Alexander Majors (1914-1900). As freighters, stagecoach operators, and originators of the Pony Express in 1860, the company collapsed in 1861 and was purchased by Ben Holladay in 1862.
