United Brothers Society records, 1805-1865.

Consists of minutes, the society's constitution, correspondence, library circulation records, addresses and poems documenting the Brown University United Brothers Society from 1805 to 1865. The Letters series and the Correspondence series document acceptances and declinations regarding various activities in the society, including appointments and elections; invitations to write a poem or to give an oration; membership; and library use and acquisitions. The society's library is also documented through loan or circulation books (1836-1862), shelf lists (n.d.), and a catalog (n.d.).

In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war". Brown faculty, students and alumni who were in the military were asked to fill out a small card called "Are you in the war?" and to send original letters, clippings or photographs which "have any bearing on the service of Brown men in the war."
