One volume is Margaret Bewicke's commonplace book, which includes verses by Margaret Spearman written when she was 12 years old and copied from an earlier manuscript; verses written on historical events, e.g., "On Mr Pitts resignation in 1761"; a broadside ballad; and elegies for family members, including Margaret Bewicke's verses on the death of her husband and verses to the memory of Mary Anne Spearman who died May 9, 1777 at 21 years of age. The commonplace book was compiled between 1811 (watermark) and 1854 at the Bewicke estate, Close House, Northumberland.
