Papers, 1798-1990, 1918-1990 (bulk).

The Harold Glendon Scheie papers mainly document his professional contributions and achievements in the field of Ophthalmology. There is a small amount of personal papers, but these still reflect, in some way, his devotion to his profession. The personal papers contain correspondence, 1927-1990, with friends and family. Scheie corresponded with his parents throughout his life. He regularly gave reports about his daily activities, patients, career, and general well being. His early correspondence, particularly the letters leading up to and during World War II, gives information on his early career and life in the Army, and for the most part are exclusively to his parents. His later correspondence is mixed with letters to and from friends he knew from the military, his profession, and other engagements. These letters reflect his community interest and involvement. His now famous friendship with Lord Mountbatten is well documented in the personal correspondence. In addition there is Mountbatten's patient file, and official biography, information on his visit to the United States, 1964, television appearances, and funeral information, 1979. Scheie's military career is also represented among the papers as are the files on his military affiliations after the war. The professional papers trace his daily activities from practice to teaching. The legacy of Scheie, the Scheie Eye Institute, is documented from its founding. There is extensive information on meetings and professional organizations he was affiliated with. Included too are his research files on a variety of topics.
