Henry Julius Neils was born at Sauk Rapids, Minnesota on April 29, 1896, the son of Julius Ferdinand Bernhard Neils (1855-1933) and Mary Catherine Geiger (1857-1949). The family moved to Cass Lake, Minnesota in 1900, where his father started the J. Neils Lumber Company. In 1917, Henry began work at the Flour City Ornamental Iron Company as a tractor mechanic.
