Within the guardlines at Chickamauga, [193-].

A photographic copy of the typed transcript of a journal, "Army Notes of 1898", kept by Emery during the Spanish-American War, when he was a member of Company C, Twelfth Minnesota Regiment. Emery was a student at Winona State Normal School prior to joining the army in April, 1898. The regiment was sent to Camp Ramsey at St. Paul, Minnesota and remained there until May. From May to September, the regiment was stationed at Chickamauga, and was mustered out at New Ulm, Minnesota, in October. The journal contains information on routine activities in camp, and comments on the war.

Harry Lee Canfield (1860-1942) was a Universalist minister in Greensboro and Kinston, N.C., 1922-1936, and a native of Ohio. Prior to his work in North Carolina, Canfield served various parishes in Ohio, Minnesota, and New England. In North Carolina he was president of the Anti-Capital Punishment Society and as a member of the State Welfare Society was active in work for the blind. He married Mary Grace Webb in 1891.
