County correspondence, 1885-1897, 1903 (bulk 1892-1896).

Primarily correspondence between local health officials and Charles N. Hewitt, secretary of the state Board of Health. Doctors and local health officials were required by state law to report all incidents of infectious disease to the health board; consequently, much of the correspondence centers on the reporting and treatment of infectious diseases, most commonly diphtheria. However, other topics, such as local sanitary conditions, new medical procedures, and unusual cases, are also mentioned, and the correspondence in general offers a useful glimpse into public health concerns and expections of the time.
