Included are a journal and correspondence of James. L. Cathcart and James Hutton, agents appointed under an act of March 1, 1817, to report on the public lands reserved to supply timber for naval purposes, 1818-1819; a reports register of special (timber) agents, 1882-1903; correspondence, permits and leases, lists of mineral lands, and accounting records of War Department officers in charge of leasing lead and copper land in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan, 1824-47(chiefly for the period after 1842, when most of these lands were ceded by the Chippewa Indians); correspondence, accounting records, contracts, maps, and related records of the GLO Washington office, 1897-1938, and the Office of the Superintendent of Logging at Cass Lake, Minn., 1903-38, relating to logging on Chippewa ceded lands in Minnesota; and records of the Grazing Servie, chiefly notices concerning decisions on applications for grazing licenses in New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming, 1935-46.

The Alaska Public Works Program was authorized during the 81st Congress through the Alaska Public Works Act, Public Law 264.
