Charles Adolphus Jewell Papers, 1860-1979.

The Charles A. Jewell, II, papers consist of original correspondence from Jewell's days as a student at Michigan Agricultural College (1860-1862) and from Jewell while he served in the 18th Michigan Volunteers during the Civil War (1862-1865). A photocopy of a manuscript edited by Jewell's grand-daughter, Ruth Jewell Nelson, contains transcribed family letters, family anecdotes, and genealogical information on the Jewell family.

Fuller was born in Mass. on Aug. 13, 1787. He moved to N.Y. (State) where he served as a member of the N.Y. Assembly and Senate. In 1837 he moved to Adrian (Mich.), where he served as a Representative from Lenawee County and Speaker of the House, 1841. Fuller also served as Assist. Postmaster under Pres. Harrison. Charles Adolphus Jewell II (1839-1909) was born in New Hampshire, but his family moved to Lime Creek, Michigan, shortly thereafter. Jewell graduated from Michigan Agricultural College in 1862, then joined the Union Army as a sergeant, where he served for three years. After an honorable discharge in 1865 as a first lieutenant, he married Regina Kenyon in 1867; they moved to homestead in Colo, Iowa, in 1869. Three children survived infancy.
