Phelps family papers, 1852-1878.

Early letters are from Andrew J. and Eugene A. Phelps to their parents, describing experiences farming, running a sawmill, gold mining at Richardsons Hill and Iowa Hill, California. Later letters relate to Eugene Phelps' work with George E. Gray as assistant engineer for the Southern Pacific Railroad and to the settlement of his estate.

The Southern Pacific Railroad was founded in 1865 and was purchased in 1869 by Collis Huntington, Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker and Mark Hopkins, better known as the Big Four. It was the first railroad to connect Los Angeles to the rest of California and its lines extended as far as New Orleans.
