Feminist and professor, Andrée Collard was born in Brussels and grew up in a small village in Belgium. In 1950 she came to the United States on a Marshall Plan scholarship. She moved to Mexico City, where she received an M.A. in Romance literature from Universidad Nacional de México (1955) and later worked as an interpreter and teacher.
