Charles J. Hare legal papers, 1866-1898.

Legal papers pertaining to numerous lawsuits involving Hare as defendant. The bulk of the collection relates to the suit filed by Hare's attorney, Samuel W. Holladay, against him for collection of legal fees. Includes correspondence, legal documents, and Hare's accounts with the firm of Porter? and legal papers from Hare's lawsuit against the U.S. to recover for damages ensued from the loss of his ship, Edward Carey, which was destroyed by the Confederate steamer, Shenandoah, during the Civil War. Also includes a certificate of U.S. citizenship (1866) issued to Hare.
