Charles Henry Hart was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1847, to Julia Leavey and Samuel Hart. He practiced law for a time, but then decided to devote himself to his interest in American art. He became a noted authority on portraiture, especially the works of Gilbert Stuart. Hart delighted in being able to expose fraudulent attributions.
