The Gas-Light Company of Baltimore was incorporated on February 5, 1817, for the purpose of providing gas lighting for the streets and individual buildings. The organizers included Rembrandt Peale, who had earlier demonstrated gas lighting in his museum, William Gywnn, Robert Cary Long, and William Lorman, who became the first president.
