The Commission of Forestry was the state agency through which the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) forest and park work was carried out upon state and private lands. The federal direction of the work was through the Forest Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture for forest work and the National Park Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior for state park projects. The forestry work of the CCC on state and private lands was directed toward construction of various improvements designed especially to advance the forest fire prevention work carried out by the commission. Development of the Ala. state parks was through CCC work camps near park sites, planned and supervised by the state forester with the assistance of the National Park Service. This series consists of maps drawn by the CCC as part of its function to advance forest fire prevention for the Commission of Forestry. The maps detail areas of Butler, Clay, Lowndes, Mobile, and Sumter counties, Ala. during 1937-1938. Shown are streams, roads, cultivated fields, orchards, restocking areas, cordwood areas, pine sawlog areas, and forested areas covered by seventeen possible timber types. Some maps have been cut into strips and placed on backings which list the survey data, mapper, line, section, township, range, and direction. Whole maps cover 1/4 (NE, SE,NW, or SW) of a township and range. Most maps are clipped together into complete township and range groups. Some maps are incomplete. Notes accompany the maps and give map reading directions and information on chain, distance, units, and remarks by township and range. These records document information about geographic features, land use, and timber types for areas of Butler, Clay, Lowndes, Mobile, and Sumter counties, Ala. in 1937-1938.
