Committee files of the Legislature, 1841-[Ongoing].

Permanent, or standing committees exist, such as Rules, Ways and Means, and Education more. These records are created by various permanent and interim committees. Interim committees are formed to study and recommend legislation on particular issues, i.e., insurance or constitutional revision. Committees are divided into those created by the House of Representatives, by the Senate, and by the two legislative bodies combined. The latter were referred to as Joint Interim Committees. Interim committees were formed between sessions of the legislature. The files contain a variety of material relating to the work of each committee, including administrative records, transcripts of public hearings, and copies of pertinent laws of other states. Also present are travel vouchers, roll call sheets, committee reports, newspaper clippings, public correspondence, copies of the proposed 1979 constitution, records concerning the 1983 constitutional revision, memoranda, mailing lists, and minutes and other records of the Public Service Commission. Joint Interim Committees were also responsible for assessing the non-federal aspects and responsibilities involved in completing the 1984 Coosa River Navigation Project. Included are minutes, newspaper clippings, and correspondence as well as maps, plans, and statistics relative to reapportionment of the state's voting districts in 1972, the 1975 Judicial Article, and revisions to the Criminal Code in 1976.
