Diaries, 1859-1923 (53 volumes); reminiscences and other autobiographical data on Butler's work as surveyor in Minnesota for several railroads, especially the Great Northern, and for the United States government; articles on lumbering and frontier life in Minnesota; and volumes of surveyor's and land examiner's field notes, especially for lands in north central Minnesota, and related expense records.

The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
