Shane Collection, 1716-1860.

Consists of Shane's collection of materials pertaining to Presbyterian history, particularly its origins in the early West. Included in this record group is the moderatorial sermon referred to above, together with correspondence of Presbyterian ministers in Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, minutes of the Board of Trustees, and other documents relating to the early history of Transylvania University, Lexington, Ky. The manuscripts provide information on modes of travel, types of illness, sources and cost of building materials, preaching tours, and the actions of churches and presbyteries. and sidelights on life in the frontier settlements.

John Dabney Shane, Presbyterian minister and collector of material on Presbyterian history and pioneer life in Kentucky and the Mississippi Valley, was born in 1812 in Cincinnati, Ohio and died there on February 7, 1864. He attended Hampden-Sydney College in Hampden-Sydney, Virginia, graduating in 1834. He also studied theology in the Union Theological Seminary in Virginia.
