Walter K. Fisher journals 1897-1901

Collection consists of his journals from field trips studying mammals and birds in northern California, Nevada, the Sierras, and the Mono Lake region, 1897-1901. There are narrative parts describing the country and the animals encountered, as well as lists of specimens and occasional sketches. The collection also includes one photograph of Fisher and a photocopy of a biographical piece by John Davis, 1958.

Walter K. Fisher (1878-1953) was born on February 1, 1878, in Ossining, New York. He was both a biologist and an artist. He attended Stanford University and studied zoology. When he worked for the U.S. Biological Survey he decided to specialize in echinoderms, which include starfishes and sea-urchins. He published "Starfishes of the Hawaiian Islands" in 1906.
