Historical Note The first meeting of what is now the La Jolla Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends was held in the Mission Hills Methodist Church in San Diego in the late 1940s. The first official business meeting was held in 1951 at the home of Ruth and Joshua Bailey in La Jolla. The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church.
