Collection includes 6 account books with entries for investments, household expenses, books, cash accounts, and other matters, 1885-1891; undated typescript of several chapters from an unpublished book "Three Centuries of Magic"; correspondence including a letter of introduction for Perry T. Tompkins, 1894, two letters to Will H. Gardner, 1939, in which Sanford recounts his career, and correspondence accompanying gift of above letters, 1967; commencement program for Palo Alto High School, 1902; and unsigned manuscript notes by speaker at Sanford's memorial service, 1948.

Sanford taught physics at Stanford University from its inception in 1891 until his retirement in 1919. He earned his B.S. at Carthage College in 1879; after several years of teaching in Illinois, he went to Germany to study with physicist Von Helmholtz.
