The Lara Hilder and Peter Liederman Papers document the couple’s environmental and nuclear disarmament activities with the Sierra Club from 1985 to 1994. These efforts focused mainly on campaigns to include nuclear disarmament in the Sierra Club’s policy agenda and publication of and research for environmentalist periodicals. The bulk of material consists of research for the publications, including government reports regarding the military’s impact on the environment, newsletters from various peace, environmental and nuclear disarmament groups, and newspaper and magazine clippings. Sierra Club activity files demonstrate Hilder and Liederman’s work to increase the organization's participation in anti-nuclear activities.

Lara Marie Hilder (Gundel), born 1946, earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Valparaiso University in 1967 and a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from U.C. Berkeley in 1975. As a chemist and researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) since 1977, Hilder developed ground-breaking methods to measure air pollutants.
