Alonzo Barnard was born in Peru, Bennington County, Vermont on June 2, 1817. He moved with his family to Ohio and was educated at Oberlin College. Recruited at Oberlin by Presbyterian clergyman Frederick Ayer for missionary work among the Ojibwe, Barnard was one of the founders of the "Oberlin" mission at Red Lake (1843).
