Born to John Thomas and Collistia (Polk) Horton in Elmo, Texas, historian and educator Coral Horton (1882–1967) taught in Travis County schools (1901-1903) and Austin public schools (1904-1906) after graduating from Denton’s Terrill School. In, 1906, she married John Ledbetter Tullis with whom she had four children. After ten years in Oregon, the family returned to Austin in 1922, where Tullis earned a B. A. and M.
