The Museum was founded as the West Texas Museum in 1929, shortly after Texas Technological College was chartered in 1925. Dr. William Curry Holden served as its first director until 1969 when he retired. He oversaw the construction of the first building, which began as a basement only, through the completion of that facility, to the construction and occupation of the current buildings in 1970. Author and historian. Born in Coolidge, Limestone County, Texas. Attended high school in Rotan, Texas. Received B.A., M.A. and Ph. D. from the University of Texas. Medical doctor, surgeon, civic leader. Born in 1878 in Belle Center, Ohio. Attended the University of Illinois Medical School. Moved from Chicago to Lubbock, Texas, in 1913. Aided in establishing West Texas Hospital in Lubbock in 1922. Physician on the 1934 Yaqui Expedition which was sponsored by Texas Technological College and Harvard University. Dr. Billy Ross, the chair of the School of Mass Communications at Texas Tech University, and a Mass Communications faculty member, Richard Schroeder, went to Pueblo, Colorado, to film German World War II art works which were supposed to be returned to Germany.
